I nvited by my company, Swimming Nature, to take part in this sprint triathlon, it didn’t take me long to accept. This area of northern Italy is stunning, and this is the perfect excuse to travel en famille from there to Alpe d’Huez afterwards for the classic LD triathlon.
This was my first sprint race so it was always going to be interesting. Pretty much all the competitors were Italian; i for sure didn’t know anyone, but was somehow expecting to take a good beating in the swim. And i wasn’t disappointed…waiting for a gun shot that never came i missed the start slightly and got stuck in the mayhem. 750m later and i was 31st out of the harbour, already 2’25” down on the leaders. Ouch! Didn’t even feel that slow…Gotta work hard on the bike, 5 loops of 4k including 3 u turns, flat but windy. Caught a few groups but the guys were sleeping so i worked hard on my own to arrive 11th in T2, some 3min down on the lead. I ran hard for 2k in my inroad Vivo Barefoot, until an unwelcome and all too familiar pain in the (left) soleus slowed me right down…still i finished, even winning the sprint for 7th! So that was a slow swim, very decent bike, and very frustrating run. Interesting as a new experience, but quite a blow to injure myself again, after a record of 2 weeks of pain free running (!), and only 3 days before the Alpe!
