Let’s Talk About Dub

I was recently asked by my friend Jim Lister to write a blurb about some of my favorite dub records for his recently launched Version blog, and since dub has always been a major influence in my life, I was more than happy to comply, and here is what I came up with:

KROSSFINGERS GUEST MIX

I have now the pleasure and pride to have a mix featured on the classy Krossfingers blog/website. In very good company here!

It did take me a bit longer than usual to do this mix, the idea was to play mostly old records and surprise the blog’s head honchos Sasha Tessio and Artem Ikra. Not an easy feat when you know the scale of these guys’ knowledge! This meant I had to think about this one quite a bit, dig out deeper than usual, and still try to come up with something that would represent me. Labour of love all the way, and I must say I am rather happy with the result! + more

2014: A Year In Music

And what a year it was!

Music, whether listening to, dancing to, digging and filing records has once again been my drug of choice, keeping me sane and smiling always. Countless hours were spent week in week out socialising, dancing, listening, debating, upgrading audio, etc from the natural hub that has become Brilliant Corners, which has now completed its first year in style -and we’re all ready to keep growing and push things forward. Too many great memories in that space to mention, but on a personal note playing alongside Floating Points back in March was a definite highlight (what a master!), as well as a private after party post Journey Through the Light back in June, house party style…the Klipschorns were literally singing that night. The man Tako Reyenga (of Red Light Records / Music From Memory, more below) also played the best DJ set I’ve heard all year. Inspiring!

Our Beauty & the Beat parties have kept on growing and evolving, selling out every time and culminating with a 17 hour (!) NYE/NYD marathon to ‘celebrate’ the closure of our home for the last 5 years, the New Empowering Church. Unforgettable. Those moments are what I live for, simple. With the best crowd around and such a great momentum, we will hopefully find a new suitable venue soon, at least before our 10 years anniversary in June (!). + more

Beauty And The Beat / End Of The Night Top 12

“It’s Sun Ra. You can dance to it. That’s why Beauty And The Beat exists.”

The ever so lovely Dr Rob @ Test Pressing asked us what a top 12 of end-of-the-night tunes would sound like and this is what we came up with. Here’s the reproduction of the original Test Pressing post. All bona fide BATB classics right there.

PS: I didn’t bribe Rob in any way for that last paragraph! + more

Brazilian Fever

Here’s the latest mix I did for the ever excellent Test Pressing website, fast becoming the mini bible for all things balearic.

It’s a freestyle all Brazilian mix, bossa, samba, jazz, funk etc, one for the summer, with or without the football.

Beauty & the Beat Tokyo Feb 2014

This was my 4th trip to Japan and I am always surprised by how amazing it turns out to be. The people, the place, the love, it’s a bliss. I feel instantly at home when I land there, it is my 2nd family !

Here’s a stop motion video of the party that was held @ Lighthouse Records in the heart of Shibuya, courtesy of Michael the wizard:

2013: A Year in Music – What We Got Down to

Despite the naysayers this was another great year in music, whether for the feet, the soul, the body, the mind, all of it. More and more music is being released every year, most of it is crap but digging (literally or not) for treasures is an art, and very rewarding it can be.

There are 6 records I can think of that were ubiquitous at our Beauty & the Beat parties (and pretty much everywhere else I played for that matter). Records we will be dancing to for years to come, pure dance-floor pleasures: + more

Brilliant Corners

It’s been a long time coming but it is finally here, Brilliant Corners, our new hub for music, food, poetry, wine, and whatever else we fancy. Looking great, sounding amazing, the space is a blank canvas as Amit loves to say, nothing is definite, only quality.

For the time being I will be hosting SARAVA ! every Saturday night until the end of the year with members of the Extended Beauty & the Beat family – we’re throwing ‘construction parties’ inna Paradise Garage style every week-end to fund the missing bits such as tables, chairs etc. Very exciting project to say the least ! + more

Guest Mix on NTS Radio’s Spirits Frequency

I had the honor of being invited on their radio show by my brothers Koichi Saikai and Kay Suzuki aka Afrobuddha, for a short interview and an exclusive 7″s only mix. As expected I had a ball, much respect to them !

We arrived in the studio as Amir finished his guest spot on the Morning Marauders show…In just a few years, NTS has grown into a big hub for crate diggers of all sorts. Big up Femi for what you’ve achieved, and it’s only the beginning.
